What actually moves local search rankings

July 22, 2026 · 4 min read

Local SEO advice tends to repeat the same five-item checklist: claim your listing, fill out every field, get reviews, be consistent. All true, and all table stakes. Past that floor, three things do most of the actual work.

Proximity you cannot fully control, relevance you can

Google weighs how close a search is to your business, how well your listing and website match what was searched, and how prominent your business is overall. Proximity is mostly outside your control. Relevance is not: your Google Business Profile category, your service list, and the actual words on your website should match the language customers search, not just the language you use internally.

Review volume and recency beat review score

A business with 40 reviews and a 4.6 average typically outranks a business with 8 reviews and a perfect 5.0. Volume and how recently reviews arrived both signal to Google that a business is active and trusted right now, not that it was popular once. A steady trickle of new reviews matters more than chasing a flawless average.

Citation consistency is a floor, not a lever

Your business name, address, and phone number matching exactly across directories used to move rankings meaningfully. Today it mostly prevents a penalty rather than earning an advantage: get it wrong and you lose trust signal, get it right and you are simply even with every competitor who also got it right. Treat citation cleanup as required maintenance, not a growth tactic.

What actually moves the needle

  • A genuinely complete, frequently updated Google Business Profile: photos added regularly, posts published, questions answered.
  • Service-area pages on your own website that go past a paragraph, with real detail about how you handle that specific service.
  • A steady, honest flow of new reviews, asked for at the moment a customer is happiest, not months later.

None of this is fast. Technical fixes and a completed profile show up in search within weeks. Actually moving up against established competitors in a competitive category takes months of the habits above, not a one-time setup.
